Soil Testing

Environmental monitoring. Site assessment. Remediation. When you are faced with the daunting task of collecting and analyzing hundreds or thousands of samples to identify the scope and boundaries of contaminated sites, you want the fastest, most powerful and accurate soil testing equipment available. You want the handheld Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t 600 Series x-ray fluorescence (XRF) environmental analyzer for reliable, definitive soil testing – and now available with GOLDD technology.

Benefits-at-a-Glance

  • Lightweight, rugged, waterproof, and dustproof
  • Unmatched speed and precision in a handheld XRF analyzer
  • Extend-a-Pole for ease of use in multiple orientations and hands-free in-situ analysis
  • GPS to integrate elemental mapping with field data
  • User friendly, fast and easy reports and certificates
  • Laboratory-quality results in real time
  • Nondestructive soil tests allow later lab comparison

Handheld XRF – the Ideal Tool for Soil Testing

Niton® XL3t Series analyzers are the ideal tools for meeting the demands of soil testing.

  • Preliminary site investigation
  • Site remediation
  • Clearance testing

With a standard analytical range from S through U, and optional lower detection limits achievable with the Niton XL3t 600 GOLDD – light element analysis (Mg, Al, Si, P, S) without helium or vacuum purging – you can identify elemental concentrations from the most subtle anomalies at unprecedented low levels to high level of contaminated soil, on-site, in real time. You get:

  • Shorter measurement times
  • Increased productivity
  • Higher profit potential
  • Lower long-term cost of ownership

Soil Methodology with Handheld XRF

Our XRF analyzers provide lab-quality soil/sediment chemistry in seconds. Pb, As, Cd, Cr, and other toxic metals contaminate sites of former industrial and agricultural activity around the world. Whatever the reasons for these occurrences, these pollutants cannot be ignored – particularly as environmental consciousness and regulatory initiatives grow.

The first remedial step in treating these hazardous areas is in accurately assessing the scope and extent of the contaminated soil. Niton XRF analyzers provide lab-grade performance in the field, permitting surgical delineation of contamination boundaries, while in full compliance with US EPA Method 6200.

Soil testing methods:

  • In-situ screening – trend analysis or quickly delineating the boundaries of contamination
  • Ex-situ analysis – bagged or prepared samples for more homogeneous samples

US EPA Method 6200

At its most basic, EPA Method 6200 is a field-screening method for analysis of in-situ and ex-situ soil test samples. Our analyzer meets the specifications for this industry-standard method by:

  • Quantifying all 26 listed elements, including all the RCRA metals
  • Allowing, via the instrument’s nondestructive nature, that 5% identical samples can be sent to a lab for confirmatory testing
  • Correcting for sample-specific matrix effects through its Fundamental Parameters software
  • Conforming to quality control testing issues, such as interferences, calibration verification, and precision measurements
