EPA Method 6200
The
handheld Thermo Scientific NITON® XRF analyzer
allows the
operator to analyze all 26 elements listed
in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)
Method 6200 in a single analysis. The instrument is capable
of both in situ analysis, for delineating
contamination boundaries, and intrusive (ex situ) analysis
which, with suitable sample preparation, can provide
laboratory-grade results in the field.
The nondestructive nature of the test also allows the
identical samples to be sent to the laboratory for
confirmatory testing as required (5% of all samples per EPA
6200).
Immediate identification of the elements that are present, including the 8 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
(RCRA) metals, and accurate determination
of the concentration of those elements provide a rapid soil contamination
profile, making it an ideal tool for Brownfield evaluation.
The NITON analyzer includes a Soil Accessory Kit,
providing everything required to prepare soil samples for ex
situ testing. Drying, grinding, and sieving of soil material
yields a homogenous sample that allows the instrument to
give more accurate results in better agreement with
lab-reported values.
The proprietary software algorithms automatically correct
for interferences and also for variations in sample density.
For those rare sample types in atypical soils, the
instrument may
be adjusted with site-specific samples to provide a more
optimum calibration.
For analyzing elements as light as
magnesium, the helium purge option is the ideal choice.
