Beyond Lead Paint
The Thermo Scientific NITON® XLi and XLp 300 Series analyzers are not only the world’s most
effective XRF analyzers for lead paint inspection and risk assessment, but they are
also routinely used as multifunctional tools to measure lead in other types of
samples. By virtue of their 109Cd source, they can provide unmatched
performance for lead-in-paint analysis, as well as taking advantage of lead’s L
shell fluorescent x-rays to measure dust wipes, soil samples, and air filters.
These capabilities provide increased potential for public agencies’ lead poisoning
prevention programs, and the opportunity to expand business services for private
enterprises.
Putting this in perspective, think of the NITON XLi and XLp as computers
connected to the elemental web; they let you “surf” the various surfaces in a
structure, not only telling you where the lead-in-paint is located, but also how deeply
buried it may be in the paint matrix, and how much lead is present. They also
locate and quantify the lead-in-soil and lead-in-building dust. Many inspectors
are enjoying additional income from prescreening wipes from post-lead abatement
projects. Although the lead inspector is not National Lead Laboratory
Accreditation Program (NLLAP) approved, and thus the
preliminary screen is non-binding, many contractors are willing to pay for this
screening service because it expedites the clearance process, in many cases by days.
No contractor wants to remobilize and come back to re-clean.
Other lead professionals use their NITON analyzers to perform soil screening for
lead around homes and businesses, quickly and accurately determining the
boundaries and scope of lead pollution that result from deteriorating building
paint, industrial activity, illegal dumping, or agricultural use.
Thermo Scientific NITON XLi and XLp 300 Series instruments are more than just
lead paint analyzers they are tools that expand the range of services provided while improving
public health.
