RoHS Compliance/Hi-Rel
RoHS Compliance Screening with Handheld XRF
Worldwide Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations continue to impact the manufacturers of electrical and electronic goods and their supply chains. By restricting the use of five commonly found substances, the burden of compliance, also known as "due diligence," is placed firmly with the brand owners, assembly houses, and PCB manufacturers.
Now, both the regulated and the enforcement agencies can screen goods for conformity with handheld Thermo Scientific Niton XRF analyzers, verifying compliance at all stages of manufacturing: from components and incoming materials, to subassemblies, to finished products, to packaging . With point-and-shoot simplicity, they:
- Quantify total lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr) and bromine (Br)
- Provide pass/fail designations for each sample, with visual identification of the out of spec elements; use default thresholds or easily customize each element
- Permit users to customize the display, include the RoHS elements, all measured elements, or only those selected
- Include a 50 kV (max) miniaturized x-ray tube for superior detection limits (Niton® XL3 only)
- Easily switch from measuring alloys, to plastics and polymers, to mixed materials including coated leads, Cr coatings, and populated PCBs
- Store results in a tamperproof format for reporting purposes with legally defensible data
Several available options further increase the handheld XRF analyzer’s flexibility:
- Optional integrated sample imaging system – visually locate, identify, specify, and store the image of the sample together with analytical results
- Small-spot capability – touch an icon on the Niton XL3’s display to reduce the measured area, zooming in on component leads or measuring discrete areas on PCBs
